The Orchards

The Orchards provide safe and supported refuges for women and children escaping domestic and family violence in Orange, Bathurst and soon, Dubbo.

The Orchards have a safe, trauma-informed, Core and Cluster design that is complemented by a service delivery model that provides personalised intensive support on site.

The Orchards provide the choice for victim survivors to stay in their community, where they have established support networks including family, friends and services, and ensure they can continue existing employment and education. This also means less time in temporary accommodation in the community which can be disruptive to family routines, as once a family is safely accommodated at The Orchard, they remain with us until they are supported to access safe, affordable long-term accommodation.

This independent living model is a considerable improvement to the communal refuge accommodation that has been standard in crisis care for many decades and better meets the needs of individual families, providing women and children leaving violence the best opportunity for trauma recovery.

The Orchard Orange

The Orchard hosts a range of domestic family violence services to provide support for women and children in our communities experiencing violence and abuse from a partner or ex-partner, another family member or someone close to them.

In 2020, Housing Plus built The Orchard Orange – one of the first Core and Cluster purpose-built women and children’s domestic and family violence centre.

The Orchard consists of a ‘core’ building containing meeting rooms, communal facilities, a crèche and overnight accommodation for one member of staff; and a ‘cluster’ of three duplex buildings, each containing two two-bedroom villas (six units in total). These are fully enclosed and set in landscaped gardens.

How do The Orchards Benefit the Community?

The Orchards:

Provide a safe and culturally appropriate space for families.

Keep women and children in their community, near schools, employment and supportive family, contributing to a faster recovery from the trauma.

Increase community volunteering by involving community groups, schools, businesses and individuals in providing a safe and supportive environment that enables women to feel part of, and not isolated from, the community.
